There are two songs, both of which fall into the broad catagory of shanties, both of which affect me similarly, but which cause something of a problem. They are “The Last Leviathan,” as covered by, notably, The Dubliners, and “Wanderer,” as sung by Forebitter …I think on one of the albums that we used to play at the Seaport print shop, but I also heard it live at a shanty sing at Mystic last year-ish.
Here’s the problem. “The Last Leviathan” is about the death of the last of the great whales; “Wanderer” is about the last voyage of the last square-rigged whaling ship.
This is a case of poignance conflict. I don’t know what do do about it.
